Opera
House
Bennelong Point, Sydney
The
Sydney Opera House, caters for all the
performing arts and is one of the world's most unusal buildings. Architect
by Danish architect Jorn
Utzon and was opened by Queen Elizabeth¥± in 1973.
in 1957-73, urban waterfront of Expressionist Modern style. Great stairway, family of forms in spherical section roofs, pure curving
shapes that across the harbor in great heroic harmony. Sculptural tripartite Opera
House was one of the longest contractual sagas of the century. Sadly, architect
Jorn Utzon became the scapegoat of a scandalous political affair and in 1966
withdrew from his project. These were made possible by Ove Arup. Originally the winner of
an international open competition in 1957, it was a scheme that broke most of
the rules. It was finally completed in August 1973 by other hands under the
direction of Peter Hall.

The Rocks
Sydney
Iron balconies in the Rocks district of Sydney were once the ballast brought out
from England. The Rocks means just that - a place where there used to be rocks. The criminals
who were sent to Australia from England cut those rocks to make this dock, the
houses and the roads. This is the home of Sydney's culture. When you walk along
the gravel roads, you can take a look at Australia's greatest modern art and
the artworks of Australian natives. On the weekends, outdoor concerts are given
here. If you get tired of walking, you can get a delicious cup of tea at the
outdoor cafes nearby. And you can sit and watch the ships sailing by.
