Built in 1897-1909 by Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the Sock Exchange is a rationalist manifesto,forming a critique of the designs of the Frenchman Louis Cordonnier; these had won the original competition for the building, held in 1884, and were in a Flemish nationalist style.
