Kong Shanghai Bank of China

Architect
by Norman
Foster in 1979-86, building type
is skyscraper commercial office tower, bank
headquarters. Construction system is steel frame and glass
of High-Tech Modern style. Dramatic exoskeleton trusses, interior atrium, escalator entry through
glazed atrium floor. Probably the best known, and
most widely publicized building of the decade, largely because it was claimed to
have cost more money than any other building to erect. Notwithstanding that kind
of publicity and the building's subsequent overshadowing by far inferior
competitors, it remains a unique architectural achievement and a small wonder of
the modern age. Photo by Byunguh Yu on 25 January 1992.
