The
greatest symbol of the soul of Rio de Janeiro is the statue of Christ the Redeemer.
With arms outstretched in blessing and in welcome to the city more than 700m
below, the soapstone sculpture was erected to mark the centennial of Brazil's
independence from Portugal in 1922 by Heitor da Silva Costa. Standing more than 30m tall on the granite
peak called Corcovado, and overlooking one of the world's most beautiful cities,
