The Massachusetts State House on 1795-98. Architect by Charles Bulfinch (1763-1844), came from a wealthy Boston family. Educated at Harvard; traveled throughout Europe between 1785-87 where he was advised by Thomas Jefferson. Involved in the planning of much of old Boston; his churches are influenced by the Englishman Sir Christopher Wren. In 1817-30 he was in charge of the design of the Capitol in Washington. Architect by Peabody & Stearns in 1913-15. The Greek Revival dominated american architecture during the period 1818-50. It was the first truly national style in the United States, found in all regions of the country. The popularity of the style was due to strong associations with classical tradition and democracy.
