The Parliament Buildings have eight paintings done by artist George H. Southwell. Four are in the Lower Rotunda and four are in the Upper Rotunda. Mounted on the Front Grounds is an Obelisk made out of B.C. Marble erected in 1863 in memory of Sir James Douglas, Chief Factor for the Hudson's Bay Company, who became the second Governor of the Crown Colony of Vancouver Island in 1856. Unveiled in 1925, stands at the foot of a driveway lined with Swedish oak, paulownia and other stately trees. Photo by Byunguh Yu on 5 August 1993.
